Integration provides an easy upgrade path from Hyundai 2D to full 3D functionality, increasing operator accuracy and productivity on a wider variety of jobs

WESTMINSTER, Colo., March 4, 2026 Trimble today announced a collaboration with Hyundai to enable civil construction contractors to upgrade from the Hyundai 2D grade control technology to the Trimble® Earthworks 3D grade control platform on select models of Hyundai excavators. This will allow Hyundai customers to take full advantage of Trimble Earthworks 3D platform, including “autos” functionality, as an aftermarket upgrade.

Trimble Earthworks 3D is intuitive, easy to use, and allows operators to create smooth, flat or sloped surfaces more easily. When the excavator is placed in autos mode, the operator controls the stick, and Trimble Earthworks controls the boom and bucket to stay on grade, reduce overcut and increase production. By automating excavator operation, Trimble Earthworks allows operators to achieve grade more consistently, with higher accuracy and in less time.

“A lot of civil contractors start with 2D machine control, which is great for simpler projects or instances where you just need to reach general depth and slope specifications, but upgrading to 3D is also a natural progression as jobs become more complex and users begin to experience the benefits firsthand,” said Scott Crozier, vice president, civil construction at Trimble. “Now, contractors that are currently using 2D systems on select Hyundai models will be able to upgrade to a 3D Earthworks system quickly and easily in the aftermarket, through the Trimble dealer channel.”

In addition to the 3D upgrade functionality, the factory Hyundai 2D grade system of the newest next-generation excavators includes virtual fence and payload capabilities, which will continue to function when the system is upgraded.

“We build machines to meet our customers’ toughest expectations, and now more than ever, they expect to be able to use the technology they need to get the job done precisely and profitably,” said Joe Hodges, North American excavator product manager at Hyundai. “We are excited to provide an easy upgrade path from factory 2D grade control to the Earthworks 3D platform. We look forward to inviting our customers in to see and experience these technology enhancements in person at our training center in Carnesville, Georgia or at one of our regional events near you.”
